Industry conferences and events can be a great platform to meet and engage with our teams. Over the past few weeks, representatives from across our Marketing business participated in some of the industry’s foremost events, including Asia Copper Week and Fastmarkets’ Middle East Iron and Steel Conference 2023.
Building bridges in the world copper industry was the theme of this year’s World Copper Conference; particularly pertinent for Anglo American, with the conference one of several events we participated in in the past couple of months.
Part of this year’s Asia Copper Week in Shanghai, China, the conference was held in person for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic and brought together more than 2000 delegates from across the global copper value chain, providing a forum for discussion around the importance of responsible and sustainable supply, and consumption.
Our Executive Head of Marketing for Base Metals, Paul Ward, represented Anglo American on a keynote panel focused on this topic, where he took the opportunity to speak about our customer collaborations and introduced Valutrax™, Anglo American’s proprietary digital traceability solution which launched on 14 November.
Timo Smit, Executive Head of Marketing and Sales for Iron Ore, speaking at the 26th Fastmarkets Middle East Iron and Steel conference
Our Executive Head of Marketing and Sales for Iron Ore, Timo Smit took part in the 26th Fastmarkets Middle East Iron and Steel Conference 2023 in Dubai. The conference brought together more than 1,000 senior executives in the iron and steel industry over the three days to network and give crucial updates on the supply and demand landscape, as well as providing a vision of iron and steel’s future. Timo shared an overview of Anglo American’s efforts to support the transition to more carbon efficient steel production processes in partnership with key customers and other industry leaders. Timo also spoke about the role Valutrax™ can play in improving transparency and providing greater assurance to our customers about the provenance of the products they purchase from us.
In Singapore, we had two representatives participating in panel discussions at this year’s FT Commodities Asia Summit, discussing carbon trading and the decarbonisation of shipping. In its fourth run this year, the summit featured a variety of speakers from around the world participating in sessions tackling a range of key issues including energy transition, decarbonisation and price volatility.
Anne Casamento, Manager for Carbon Emissions Trading, Energy Solutions, joined the panel ‘What’s the future for carbon trading?’, where she shared an expert’s view on the need to improve the integrity, validity and security of carbon credits, and the importance to drive standardisation across the different markets in order for carbon trading to really take off.
Peter Lye, Global Head of Shipping joined a panel session focused on decarbonisation and digitalisation in shipping, where he spoke about how the need for collaboration between ship owners, charterers, customers and regulators has come into sharper focus in the past year. There was broad alignment from participants that the time for a homogenous fuel solution is ending, and that the maritime industry will need to move into multi-fuel solutions, with consequent changes to how it operates.
We hope to see many more of you in the months ahead. If you’d like to know where you can meet the Anglo American sales and commercial teams, please email [email protected]
